Why is mercury often used in boil-mariot experiments?

u know the equation of ideal gases : PV=NRT if T is constant then pv should be constant too . to show this we did an experiment in our college but we used mercury(Hg) to measure pressure . why? why in most of experiments about measuring pressure we use mercury? not water,...?
